SCORM: Best way to share your learning content across the web

Are you looking for a solution or content management tool that can help you to share your learning content with LMS systems across the globe?

Designing of a good learning content needs a good research work, in-depth knowledge of the subject and off course most importantly efficient delivery mechanism. In most of the cases significant efforts are required from content team to shape the content with the best possible graphical illustrations, diagrams including audio/video content as well. One definitely prefers to retain and reuse this work which anyway is a result of a great team work.

However there are challenges in packaging these learning contents in a sharable package that too, can be delivered over the wires across the internet network for LMSs.

Here comes SCORM, a standard governed and published by the Advanced Distributed Learning Initiative (ADL).  SCORM is in my experience is the best protocol or standard to address the challenge.

Few Important terminologies (steps) used during the process of making a learning content SCO (Sharable Content Object) for SCORM Enabled LMSs are: Aggregations, Packaging, Sequencing and Navigation

Aggregation: Very first step to compile & compose learning content from various discoverable, reusable, sharable, and interoperable sources.

Authoring Tool: There are quite a few tools available in the market to create an interactive & professional SCORM compliant content from scratch. Few of them are:

  • Brainshark
  • Assima (STT Trainer Content Manager)
  • dominKnow Learning Systems
  • CrossKnowledge (Mohive)
  • ZebraZapps
  • Mzinga Publisher
  • SumTotal (Learning Content Management)
  • Zenler (Zenler Studio elearning suite)
  • DuPont Sustainable solutions – eLearning Suite (Authoring Tool)
  • e-doceo
  • ReadyGo
  • Lectora
  • Articulate

Packaging: Packaging is normally used to transform the learning content into SCO. This is actually a combination of resource files (core content), schema definition files, and corresponding manifest files into a single compressed file (Zip). Packaging process makes content (SCO) a deployable SCORM conformant content.

Sequencing and Navigation: Set of rules that must be followed by LMS in order to provide the best learning experience in a particular order or sequence. Navigation defines the way to process the navigation requests and sequencing is responsible for determining what happens next in response to the navigation requests issued.

Infrastructure: Comprising of Run Time API, Data Model. RTE handles launching of content objects, establishing communication via retrieving & setting data between LMS and SCOs and tracking the status of the SCO.

SCORM compliant LMS: Here are few popular SCORM compliant LMS software solutions worldwide:

  • Moodle
  • Edmodo
  • Blackboard
  • SumTotal Systems
